BioOne 始于 1999 年，是一个由多家著名大学赞助，由各学协会、高校与出版社联合组成的非营利组织，是唯一一个在生物科学研究领域具有高影响力的期刊整合联盟。 BioOne 的创立者包括：美国生物科学研究所（ The American Institute of Biological Sciences ， AIBS ），学者出版及学术资源联盟（ Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition ， SPARE ），美国肯萨斯大学（ The University of Kansas ），美国西部图书馆联盟（ Greater Western Library Alliance ）以及亚伦出版公司（ Allen Press, Inc. ）。目前收录来自 155 家非商业出版社和学协会出版的高品质生物科学期刊，是相关学科进行教学研究的基础学术资源。
2018 年 1 月起， BioOne 共收录 214 种由学协会和非营利出版社出版的高品质生物科学学术期刊，其中 81% 有影响因子， 64% 期刊可提供 XML 格式，为 BioOne 独家收录。 97% 以上的期刊为同行评审期刊。 5 年平均影响因子高于 2 的期刊达到 27 种，所收录的 Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 期刊 2008 年影响因子高达 16.385 。内容来自全球 24 个国家 155 家出版社，自 1965 年起至今，共约 150 万页内容。现刊内容每日更新。
